$17,341 Grant Boosts Recreation for Individuals with Disabilities in Central New York

The Arc Madison Cortland was awarded a $17,341 grant from the Trustee Management Board of NYSARC Trust Services to support the agency's recreation programs.

 

NYSARC Trust Services administers supplemental needs trusts (SNT) and pooled trusts that can make dramatic improvements to the lives of people with disabilities by enabling individuals to maintain financial eligibility for Medicaid and other means-tested government benefit programs. For 2024, NYSARC Trust Services is proud to fulfill its commitment to enhancing the lives of people with disabilities by awarding a total of $2,697,508 to The Arc New York Chapters statewide.

 

The Arc Madison Cortland utilized the $17,341 grant to enhance recreational programs for individuals with disabilities through various engaging activities. Highlights included a festive annual "Holiday Blast" Party, a trip to see Cinderella at Syracuse Stage, and outings to Syracuse Crunch and Syracuse Mets games. The funds also allowed for the purchase of gardening supplies and the hosting of an End-of-Summer Bingo Party. To wrap up the year, the organization held its Annual Holiday Concert at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Oneida, celebrating the talents of the participants. These events fostered community engagement and personal growth within the individuals served.

The application period for The Arc New York 2025 scholarships is now open! Each year, The Arc New York presents scholarships to students pursuing degrees in special education, nursing, physical or occupational therapy, and other fields related to intellectual or other developmental disabilities.

 

The application period for the 2025 scholarships has been extended an additional month to better align with college semesters. Applications are to be submitted by Friday, February 7, 2025. All necessary information must be submitted by the deadline for the application to be considered for review.

 

To access the online application and review the submission guidelines and requirements, click on the name of the scholarship you would like to apply for. Links to the online applications are also posted on www.thearcny.org.

 

  • JONATHAN WEINGOLD SCHOLARSHIP – For The Arc New York Chapter employees. This $3,000 scholarship per recipient is presented annually to full-time Chapter employees who wish to further their education with the intention of contributing to the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities. The scholarship is paid in two installments of $1,500, one per semester. The funds must be claimed within a four-year period from the time the scholarship is awarded. Four scholarships are presented annually.

  • ARTHUR W. PENSE SCHOLARSHIP – For nursing, physical, or occupational therapy degree program students. This $3,000 scholarship is paid in two installments of $1,500 per semester. The funds must be claimed within a four-year period from the time the scholarship is awarded. One scholarship is presented annually.

  • JAMES F. REVILLE SCHOLARSHIP – For full-time college students in a program related to the intellectual and developmental disability field such as behavioral sciences, social work, healthcare administration and management, or psychology. This $3,000 scholarship per recipient is paid in two installments of $1,500 per semester for any year the student is enrolled in college in a program related to the field of intellectual or other developmental disabilities. The funds must be claimed within a four-year period from the time the scholarship is awarded. Two scholarships are presented annually.

  • JOSEPH T. WEINGOLD SCHOLARSHIP – For students enrolled in a New York State degree program, leading to a special education certification. This $3,000 scholarship per recipient is paid in two installments of $1,500 per semester. The funds must be claimed within a four-year period from the time the scholarship is awarded. Two scholarships are presented annually.

OPWDD Invites You to Take the Care Coordination Program Evaluation Survey

There is an opportunity for people with lived disability experience and their family members to provide feedback on their experiences with care management.
​
OPWDD currently has a contract with the American Institutes for Research to evaluate the Care Coordination program independently. The goal is to identify the aspects of the program that are working well and those that need improvement.
​
Those who regularly engage with Care Coordination Organizations and care managers can offer valuable feedback to enhance care management in the future. This online survey should take 15-20 minutes and will remain open until August 26, 2024.

The Arc Madison Cortland Granted $27,800 in Funds For Corporate Guardianship Program

The Arc Madison Cortland has been awarded a grant from the Trustee Management Board of NYSARC Trust Services, supporting the agency’s Corporate Guardianship program.

​

NYSARC administers supplemental needs trusts and pooled trusts that can make dramatic improvements to those living with disabilities by enabling them to maintain eligibility for public benefits programs, such as Medicaid and SSI.  NYSARC Trust Services is proud to fulfill its commitment in 2024 to enhancing the lives of people with disabilities by awarding a total of $2,697,508 in grants to NYSARC chapters statewide.

​

This year, The Arc Madison Cortland received $27,800 to provide Corporate Guardianship services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who would not otherwise have a legal guardian or advocate.

​

Supported by Chapter staff and community volunteers, The Arc Madison Cortland Corporate Guardianship program currently provides supports and services to five people and is ready to assist three more as a Standby or Alternate Standby guardian.
